Species account (old)
This species remains just as common as at the end of the last century, though perhaps more restricted to two main habitats, viz, coastal sand dunes (where, though polyphagous, the larvae prefer Salix repens in the dune slacks) and cliff tops, and upland coarse grassland and heather moors. In May and June the females are easily disturbed during daylight and probably engage in a dispersal flight at that time. The males can be taken in their mating flight an hour or two before sunset with the females appearing later just before dusk. Both sexes, however, have been taken in light traps. The larvae are conspicuous and easily found.
