Monopis imella

Species account (old)
This is another one of the animal feeders. When TCD came to live in The Poplars at Chester-le-Street, the wooden garage was found to be insulated on the inside of the walls with sheets of a heavy cardboard type of material containing much interwoven horsehair. Monopis imella emerged in immense numbers every year and the caterpillars, swathed in quantities of silken threads, were found to be feeding on the horse-hair. Moths emerged in swarms during June, July and August every year from 1948 to 1961. The whole garage was replaced during the last year of plenty, whereupon they disappeared from the trap catches. It is not seen very frequently elsewhere, there being only one additional record for vc66, a single specimen taken in the Rothamsted trap at Shildon, 30-8-1987 (TCD). [...]
