This species has an unusual history in the British Isles. Discovered by Sang in 1861 near Hartlepool, before it was admitted to the British list, the railway bankside between Hartlepool and Hesleden Station remained the only site for it in the British Isles for some years. Robson, Gardner and their friends all knew it and collected specimens. Robson says that it could be seen in swarms. After 1913, when Robson and Gardner ceased publishing records, it was never heard of again until 1970 when A. M. Emmet found it in the west of Ireland. A further note in MBGBI vol. 2 records a recent discovery of it in the Inner Hebrides. It feeds on Trifolium medium, zigzag clover, and we would welcome comments from our local entomologists who may have collected on the costal railway south of Hesleden.
