Merveille du Jour
Griposia aprilina
Species account (old)
Robson regarded this beautiful noctuid as 'Common amongst Oaks, but rarely approaching the coast'. [...] In Durham we have quite large numbers of records, and some, such as from the oakwoods of the Derwent and mid-Tees valleys mention it as common. It appears in the Chester-le-Street trap with predictable regularity, up to ten being taken each year. Altogether, it could be designated widespread and not uncommon. As a final note, to give Robson his due, it might be mentioned that D. A. Sheppard was only able to obtain one specimen (at the village) in his intensive researches at Castle Eden Dene (but Castle Eden Dene is not an oak wood).
