Goat Moth
Cossus cossus
Species account (old)
This very retiring species, which lives its larval life in old tree trunks, is seldom seen even where it is known to occur. Robson provided a number of records for vc 66 from the time of "Ornsby's Durham" to the 1870's, mostly of wandering caterpillars but in one case of a live moth. It has not been seen since then and must now be considered extremely rare or even extinct in Durham. [...] The moth itself is very sluggish, and probably flies no great distances. [...] This species is an example of one with a disjunct distribution having its main stronghold along the south coast and a small relict population in North Scotland.
