Yellow-tail
Euproctis similis
Species account (old)
There are a few records of recent origin, though none between 1900 and 1952. In the latter year I. N. Scaling reported that members of the Teesdale & Darlington N.F.C. found larvae in large numbers feeding on wild rose on the south side of Darlington (Vasc. 37, 30), and J. W. H. Harrison noted that this was the first record for vc 66 for over 50 years. Not far away, it was taken in the Stockton trap on 28 July 1965. [...] M. Mann took a specimen at Sacriston on 14 July 1974. R. I. McAndrew reported it from Hartlepool in numbers during 24 July-2 August 1977, it appeared in the Bolam (Darlington) trap the same year, Sheppard and Eyre found it in Castle Eden Dene in 1978, R. Henderson caught one at light in Washington on 19 September 1980 and O. Wynn had one at Lumley in August 1985. The pattern of records clearly indicates that the species is increasing its range in our [county].
