Small Purple-barred
Phytometra viridaria
Species account (old)
Robson reported this species as 'Well distributed [...] but never abundant. It no doubt occurs in all suitable localities'. [...] It is known from several widely separated localities in Durham, where it often produces fair numbers during late June and July. The larva feeds on the two common species of Milkwort, Polygala vulgaris which prefers lime-rich habitats and P. serpyllifolia which grows on lime-free soil. We have records from Hawthorn Hive, Black-hall cliffs and Hurworth, where it doubtless feeds on P. vulgaris (the less common species) and also from the Teesdale Fells, Hisehope Valley, Knitsley Fell, Lanchester and Shotley Bridge, where its pabulum will be P. serpyllifolia.
