Buff Ermine
Spilosoma lutea

Species account (old)
[...] In Durham it is generally distributed in the east and central lowland areas. It becomes more frequent than the previous species [Spilosoma lubricipeda] in the east, up to about the western edge of the central Wear valley; at this point it begins to thin out, and has never been taken in the Hamsterley Forest trap, or the Middleton-in-Teesdale and Langdon Beck stations, though reaching the 250m. contour in the Hisehope valley on Stanhope Common. J. Proudlock bred a beautiful female form of ab. zatima Stoll, from larvae obtained at Bates Cottages, Seaton Delaval about 1921 (Vasc., 8,32).
