Lilac Beauty
Apeira syringaria
Species account (old)
This is another species about which Robson had very little information. He had only [one record] [...] in July 1876 from Thornley Wood by Hedworth. Since then the moth seems to have spread somewhat as we now find it much more widespread although never very common. It continues to be found in various stretches of woodland in the Derwent Valley, e.g. at Chopwell, Thornley Wood, Hookergate/High Spen road and Gibside [...] Apart from the Derwent Valley, in Durham the moth has also been found in Castle Eden Dene by Sheppard, at Sacriston by K. Dover, M. Mann and R. Woods, every year in the Hamsterley Forest trap, and at Lumley near Chester-Ie-Street where it has been reported by D. Wynn. It has even turned up in the Chester-le-Street trap, significantly perhaps, every year after planting an ornamental honeysuckle along the west-facing wall in the garden (TCD).
