Plain Pug
Eupithecia simpliciata
Species account (old)
This is a very local species frequenting waste ground, tidal river banks and salt marshes where Chenopodium and Atripiex are found. In the Catalogue only John Gardner had ever taken it and only occasionally at that, about Hartlepool, where the Teesmouth Marshes would have a strong influence in those days before the land was infilled for industrial development. This area, despite its contraction in size and wildlife importance, gives us our only recent record. R. T. McAndrew took a specimen on the Tees marshes near Saltholme on 19 August 1978, which shows that it survives (Vasc. 65:14).
