Larentia clavaria
Species account (old)
This is a rather scarce and local species possibly due to the scarcity of its foodplant which has disappeared from many of the roadside verges and waste places in recent times. Its absence from roadside verges is undoubtedly due to the excessive use of herbicides from the late 1960's until recently. TCD used to find larvae on its foodplant, Malva sylvestris, quite regularly in the 1950's around Chester-le-Street but the plant is now hard to find. The caterpillars are easy to grow on in captivity. [...] It appeared in the University Rothamsted trap at Durham on 15 September 1967 and it has occurred each year since 1981 in the Rothamsted trap in Hamsterley Forest, which began operating during that year.
