Laburnum Leaf Miner
Leucoptera laburnella

Species account (old)
[Dunn and Parrack treat Leucoptera laburnella and Leucoptera wailesella separately as follows. Both are now recorded as Leucoptera laburnella.] [Leucoptera laburnella] Evidently under-recorded by Robson (as noted by Gardner), it is now widespread and very common in Durham, where it is found on laburnums in gardens and the planted shrubberies of larger estates, sometimes in swarms. [...] It is also recorded as feeding on garden lupins but TCD has yet to see it on this foodplant despite having grown lupins for over half a century! [Leucoptera wailesella] Differs mainly in size from the preceding species and when coupled with the darker antennae the two characters would be sufficient to identify a specimen. If it can be bred from its foodplant, Dyer's Greenweed (Genista tinctoria), this would be a stronger indication. Found only very sparingly [...] it was taken near Chester-le-Street 28-7-1989 and in the garden trap on 21-7-1989 [TCD].
