Acronicta leporina
Species account (old)
Robson regarded the range of this species as being apparently bounded by the Tyne valley [...] In Durham the species is taken occasionally by the Chester-le-Street and Sacriston collectors, but it cannot be said to be a common moth. J. P. Robson took it regularly in the Barnard Castle area, but it has not been recorded further west in Teesdale. Several larvae were beaten from areas around Birtley in the 1950's by J. W. H. Harrison. D. A. Sheppard and M. Eyre found it at Thornley Wood and Gibside in the Derwent Valley in the 1970's, and also at Low Redford in Hamsterley Forest, although it has never appeared in the Rothamsted trap there. Robson makes a point rather strongly about the difficulty of recognising the larva, but we do not agree with his conclusions, and find the larva quite conspicuous: more than half the records for Durham are of larvae.
