Dark Dagger
Acronicta tridens
Species account (old)
The only satisfactory record that we have for either county is of one bred through from the (quite distinctive) larva taken from an apple tree in TCD's garden at Chester-le-Street. It emerged on 12 June 1964. In this species imagines can only be identified satisfactorily by an examination of the genitalia. In set specimens this can be done by removing the scales at the end of the abdomen with preferably a fine bristle oil-painting brush. A fine illustration of the exposed genitalia is now available (in 'Moths of the British Isles', B. Skinner, 120. Fig. 40). and it is to be hoped that the distribution of the two species will now become clearer.
