Sprawler
Asteroscopus sphinx
Species account (old)
This species was known to the early collectors from the extreme south of Durham. Robson records that J. Sang took it at lamps in Darlington in 1853 and a Mr. Winter found it at lamps in Hartlepool about the same time. It is now only known from the Barnard Castle area in County Durham, where J. P. Robson saw many at street lamps in 1920 and took more specimens on 17th October 1950. It is probably still there although we have no recent information from that area. [...] The species is doubtless under-recorded as it is on the wing very late in the year, typically from early October to late November. [Durham and Northumberland] is, however, the northerly limit of its range in the British Isles.
