Dusky-lemon Sallow
Cirrhia gilvago
Species account (old)
[...] this species receives no mention by [...] Robson [...] it was first recorded [...] on 6 October 1915, when it was captured at Barnard Castle by .J. P. Robson. He continued to take specimens up to 1942 when he ceased sending in notes about it (Vasc. 2, 27 and 33, 8). TCD took it in the Chester-le-Street trap for the first time in 1951, since when it has continued to appear intermittently up to the present. F. Stubbs had it at light at Crook from 1965 to 1977, and in 1976 several collectors reported it, M. Mann at Sacriston, I. Findlay at Middleton-in-Teesdale and the Bolam, Darlington trap (JDP), all in September of that year. There seems to be a flourishing colony around Sacriston, for M. Mann continues to take it, R. Woods took it nearby in 1979, and one was at Chester-le-Street Riverside Park on 6 September 1982. The Hamsterley Forest trap has only taken one, on 15 September 1984. [...] Apart from a few records in and around Perthshire, the moth reaches its northern limit about the Firth of Forth. To quote MBGBI (10, 122) 'Although Wych-elm (Ulmus glabra) has suffered in general less than English Elm (U. procera) from 'Dutch Elm disease', the status of this moth should be carefully observed in case of rapid decline'.
