Mullein
Cucullia verbasci
Species account (old)
This species is very rare in Durham, largely because of the scarcity of wild mullein plants on which the larvae feed. The records so far received are all from South Durham, indicating that it probably reaches its northern limits here. J. R. Johnson had larvae at Hurworth in 1933, and .J. P. Robson collected larvae in 1937, -1939 and 1943 at Barnard Castle from which he reared imagines. TCD had larvae from plants along the roadside near Witton Park on 7-7-1978: five caterpillars yielded a single moth after transfer to sprigs of garden Buddleia davidii, the imago emerging on 15-4-1979.
