Smoky Wainscot
Mythimna impura
Species account (old)
Widespread throughout the area in Robson's day, it has retained this status to the present time, and is to be found commonly in all suitable habitats and in all the lists. In MBGBI (9, 264) we find 'Although uncommon on acid moorland or in dense woodland, this species seems able to thrive in most other kinds of habitat'. It may therefore be worth commenting that it not infrequently feeds during the day on heather blossom [...] It flies from the last week in June to the beginning of September, and often comes to the flowers of Ragwort and thistles during the day and particularly just before dusk.
