Small Yellow Underwing
Panemeria tenebrata
Species account (old)
[...] In Durham the species is local, but found in small numbers in coarse grassland sites on the eastern side of the county. In 1922 J. P. Robson reported it near OarIington, and it was found at another site nearby in 1938. J. W. H. Harrison recorded it from Ferryhill, East Hetton Colliery pitheap and Bishop Middleham Quarry - which latter site seems very reliable as it has yielded several other reports in more recent times. D. A. Sheppard and M. Eyre found it at Witton-le-Wear Nature Reserve in May 1977, and it was seen by several entomologists during a N.N.U. Field Meeting in Wynyard Forest in May 1981. It is very recently beginning to spread northwards again, appearing in the Brasside Nature Reserve in 1984-85 and reaching the River Banks at Chester-Ie-Street by 23 May 1985, the most northerly point so far in its present range expansion.
