Campion
Sideridis rivularis
Species account (old)
Robson noted this species as rather common 'but apparently almost as much of a coast species as Carpophaga (i.e. H. perpIexa)' [...] In Durham it is widely distributed but never common. Recorded from Teesdale by J. P. Robson in 1927, it is still found there by I. Findlay. TCD took it by 'dusking' on the river banks at Chester-le-Street, at Campion flowers in 1951, and has since taken it regularly in his garden trap: he also found it at Waldridge Fell (1957) and Birtley (June 1958), and R. Woods and M. Mann have both taken it at Sacriston. It has not, however, been taken recently at any of the coastal sites, or in the limestone quarries - which is surprising as these are sites much favoured by Bladder Campion. The larvae can be taken easily by shaking Bladder Campion flowers into a tray. Many, however, are parasitised, and the success rate for breeding through is seldom more than 10%.
