Setaceous Hebrew Character
Xestia c-nigrum
Species account (old)
Robson gave this species as 'widely distributed and common in most parts [...]', and in 1875 J. C. Wassermann had it as '...double brooded, the first lot appearing at the end of June, and the second at the beginning of October'. [...] Although fairly widely distributed still in Durham, it is never in large numbers. The moths are usually on the wing in July, but occasionally one turns up in October, probably an immigrant. It has only been taken once in Upper Teesdale - in October 1976, an exceptional year for the species. It has likewise appeared only once in the Hamsterley Forest trap, on 22 August 1984- a date more likely to represent a locally-bred individual.
