This species is widely distributed, but nowhere very common in the adult stage [...] with a concentration of records along the more humid valleys and on moorland verge habitats where scrub birch grows. It occurs annually in some of the traps as at [...] Upper Teesdale and Hamsterley Forest, and at light in many other sites, although on the coast only at [...] Crimdon Dene [...]. The majority of records refer to larvae, generally beaten from birch and oak. From time to time TCD has come across up to 60 together on a single birch, so that some degree of defoliation is caused, but numbers of this order never appear as imagines, presumably due to the high degree of parasitisation from which larvae collected in the wild usually suffer.
