Another widely but, in Durham, rather thinly distributed species, with a very conspicuous caterpillar which is so striking that it is noticed just as frequently as the moth. [...] There are [...] extensive records for Durham from coastal sites (Blackhalls and Easington cliffs near dene mouths) magnesian limestone quarries (Wingate and Bishop Middleham) and through mid-Durham to high up the dales at Langdon Beck, Westgate in Weardale and the Durham side of Blanchland. It can be expected wherever sallows are found, notably in moorland verge habitats, humid river valleys, and coastal dune slacks and streamsides: the lower branches of such bushes usually yield the larvae.
