Species account (old)
A fairly common migrant species, as with the others [see Agrius convolvuli, Acherontia atropos] perhaps not quite as plentiful as formerly, but still turning up every two to three years-often a few records at a time. It is noted in spring and again in later summer and autumn, and larvae have been found (usually on Galium verum) either along the coastline or on sandy river banks, but it is unlikely that the species can survive the winter with us at any stage in its development. The earliest records fall fairly consistently around the second week of June, and are widespread [...] and by no means restricted to coastal or southerly localities.
