In this case, Rosa pimpinellifolia is preferred to other species and forms of the genus and consequently a markedly coastal distribution is found, although other rose species are occasionally accepted on inland sites. Sang was familiar with it in Castle Eden Dene and on the coast at Blackhall Rocks, and Robson himself knew it in Hartlepool.
