European Corn-borer
Ostrinia nubilalis
Species account (old)
Gardner's record (c. 1900, Hartlepool) was one of the very few early signs of immigration of this species that became established along the Thames Estuary in the 1930's, and is now found near some of the south coast ports. On the Continent it is a pest of maize amongst other plants, but here it is associated entirely with mugwort (Goater, BPM p. 75). In recent years, Sheppard and Eyre recorded specimens from Ewehurst Wood (vc 66, 1976) [...] Specimens so far from the coast, or from any known sources, in successive years seem to us an improbable coincidence, and we quote the records with some misgivings.
