Convolvulus Hawk-moth
Agrius convolvuli
Species account (old)
This species is an irregular immigrant, the numbers of which vary from year to year. being on the wing from July to November. The early arrivals may lay eggs from which larvae may feed up and pupate by November, but never produce moths in the wild because of unsuitable weather conditions during winter. Moths fly at dusk, when they may be seen at flowers with deep-seated nectar, including Nicotiana, Petunia and Lonicera (wild and garden Honeysuckle) together with wild [...] Years in which [multiple] moths have been seen include [...] 1917 and 1976. [...] it is doubtful if it now occurs as frequently as in former years. A rather surprising instance is the complete lack of records for 1945-the year of maximum immigration to the British Isles (MBGBI, 9, 22)-at a time when the species was still being recorded in most years.
