Beech-green Carpet
Colostygia olivata

Species account (old)
Robson found the insect '... fairly common and well distributed [...] but does not appear to occur near the sea'. We would agree with the second and third statements, but it is by no means a 'fairly common' species now. J. P. Robson recorded it as rare in Upper Teesdale in the 1920's and '30's, and C. Longstaffe noted it at Hamsterley in 1948. Since then single specimens have been taken in the Hisehope Valley (1954, TCD), Westgate in Weardale (1957, J. W. H. Harrison), Horsleyhope Ravine (1978, Sheppard and Eyre) and regularly in the Hamsterley trap since 1983, although only in small numbers. [...] The foodplants are bedstraws so that woodland and moorland habitats should both be suitable. The moth quickly becomes rubbed so as to make identification difficult and this may be one of the reasons for our paucity of records.
