Juniper Pug
Eupithecia pusillata
Species account (old)
As its name suggests, this species is attached to Juniper, wild plants of which support large numbers of larvae. Robson states that ' . . - it is not easy to beat the larvae out'. TCD does not find this to be so difficult as Robson seemed to think. On countless occasions tapping junipers in Upper Teesdale and other places has resulted in larvae tumbling on to the tray without any difficulty. Breeding them though is less easy for no matter at what stage they are collected, well over 90% are parasitised It used to be taken on Waldridge Fell and at Blackhall, but after the demise of the last bush on Waldridge Fell in 1947 and the gradual disappearance of plants at Blackhall (only one now left alive), the insect has disappeared from both places. It is found either as larvae or in light traps at all the other juniper sites by a large number of workers. It is in Upper Teesdale on both sides of the river, Fine Burn (Bollihope), Upper Bollihope, Apperley Dene roadside Tunstall Reservoir Valley west side, Hisehope Burn and Honey Hill, along the Grain Becks on Pikestone Fell, Dryderdale [...] We can label it as common enough although local because of the restricted distribution of juniper.
