Golden-rod Pug
Eupithecia virgaureata
Species account (old)
This is the Pimpernel Pug, E. pimpinellata of Robson's Catalogue, a name which is very misleading as it has no connection with either Pimpinella saxifraga or Anagallis arvensis. Very easily confused with Eupithecia sub fuscata Haw., the females of which species are only distinguishable from virgaureata by detailed examination of the genitalia. Since we have so few records of the Golden-rod Pug we can only conclude that some of the Grey Pug records are misplaced. Robson's only record was of a solitary specimen he took himself on the railway side at Hartlepool on 18 July 1876. We had no records ourselves until last summer when a number of suspected species were submitted to A. Riley who confirmed it for the Westgate-in-Weardale trap in May and June 1985. TCD also took it in the Chester-Ie-Street trap, 25 July 1985, 31 July 1985 and 7 August 1985. These are the only recent records but we feel sure it must be present elsewhere [...].
