Species account (old)
A local species, more widely known to the collectors of Robson's time than it is today. [...] Pickard found it on the moors above Wolsingham [...] TCD has encountered it along the burn valleys high on the moorlands, as larvae on S. repens and S. aurita. It was on moorland south of Wolsingham in 1957 and along smaller tributaries of the Bollihope Burn in 1959, also appearing on S. aurita in the Hisehope Valley near Smiddyshaw Reservoir in August 1968. We feel that it is less rare than these few records indicate, but the imagines fly extremely late at night and sometimes in the early morning sunshine so that they are easily missed, and the larvae feed in tight spinnings at the tips of sallow twigs, from whence they are not dislodged by beating, but need to be individually searched for all circumstances which will tend to make the species under-recorded.
