Golden Plusia
Polychrysia moneta
Species account (old)
This species did not arrive in England from the Continent untiI 1890. Its subsequent progress through England, reaching County Durham at Hart in 1919 (C. Nicholson) [...] The 1920's. and 1930's saw a rapid expansion of range, with records from Darlington in 1925-27 (C. H. Dixon) [...] Barnard Castle in 1927 (U. P. Robson), Birtley in 1929, 1932 and 1933 (U. W. H. Harrison), Durham City in 1933 (J. W. H. Harrison) [...] Sunderland in 1936 (J. Newton), Wolsingham (J. W. H. Harrison) [...]. During the War years, reports were necessarily restricted, but it was again recorded for Co. Durham from Chester-le-Street (TCD) and Shotton (J. W. H. Harrison) in 1950 [...] Thereafter records fell off [...] in Durham, though F. Stubbs was still taking it in Crook in the years 1965-77. [...] It wasn't until the early 1980's, however, that [an] [...] increase began to be noticed in Durham, when the insect again became more numerous in the lower Wear valley. It is interesting to note that a corresponding recession appears to have occurred in Scotland about the late l950's/early 1960's (MBGBI, 10, 336). In good years it seems well able to hold its own, but it may well be that the northern limits of its range are in danger following unfavourable seasons.
