Powdered Quaker
Orthosia gracilis

Species account (old)
Robson regarded this species as 'not generally common' [...] This species is now well distributed in Durham, but [...] with the exception of upland areas, although it is taken regularly in the Hamsterley Forest trap at c. 200m. The eastern magnesian limestone plateau does not produce many records either. In April 1954 a fine bright red specimen (ab. rufescens Tutt) was taken at catkins of Salix repens at Birtley Fell, a site which has now disappeared under the A1 (M). Type specimens were flying at the same time, and it is interesting to note that the nearest Bog Myrtle, which is supposed to be the foodplant of rufescens is many miles away in North Northumberland or North Yorkshire.
