Spilonota ocellana
Species account (old)
[Dunn and Parrack treat Spilonota ocellana and Spilonota laricana together as follows. Both are now recorded separately.] This species has two distinct forms: the nominate form feeds on various members of the Rosaceae and Salix spp., while the smaller and darker form laricana is dependent on larch. Emmer (Guide to Smaller Lepidoptera) regards the two as distinct species, but here (as elsewhere) we follow Bradley and Fletcher's 'Label List'. Both forms are present in vc 66 (though obviously separated geographically by their respective foodplants) [...] it was first encountered by Sang and Backhouse in South Durham (regarded as its most northerly limit at the time).
