Common Emerald
Hemithea aestivaria
Species account (old)
Robson could mention only a single record of this species, which was from Darlington by Backhouse in the 1850's. In his opinion this was only a stray. A very fresh, apparently newly emerged specimen appeared in the Chester-le-Street trap on 22nd July 1985. This could have been another stray but its fresh appearance indicated that it was probably from a local pupa. It remains to be seen whether further specimens are seen during the next year or two to confirm the presence of a breeding colony. The caterpillars will have no difficulty in finding food for they will accept a variety of shrubs and trees such as hawthorn, blackthorn, birch, oak and sallow.
