Codling Moth
Cydia pomonella
Species account (old)
Not well known to the early collectors (Robson had one at Hartlepool and Gardner took "odd specimens") [...] perhaps because of its retiring habits, it is even less familiar today. Apparently it prefers "A cold but not severe winter followed by an early spring and a warm, dry summer" as optimum conditions (B. T. & S., Il, p. 273), whereas seasons without extremes of temperature prove detrimental. TCD suffered from the depredations of this moth quite severely in the 1950's and 60's but the infestation cleared up of its own accord, without the use of pesticides, possibly due to unfavourable weather conditions.
