Species account (old)
One of the few Noctuids that can really be described as 'ubiquitous', it is equally at home in urban and suburban gardens, sand dunes, farmland hedgerows, rough pasture and .meadows, and spreading to the highest moorland where it is a common sight at heather blossom in the autumn. From spring immigrants a local generation is reared which is on the wing in late summer, when numbers are reinforced by renewed immigration from Scandinavia. Whilst there are records of imagines as late as mid-November and as early as mid-May (possibly giving rise to two summer flights in favourable years) there are no records of hibernation, nor have the immature stages been recorded [...] during the winter months.
