Death's-head Hawk-moth
Acherontia atropos
Species account (old)
Of similar immigrant status to the last species [Agrius convolvuli], though appearing in general more regularly (indeed almost every second or third year), but nowadays rarely more than singles being recorded in any one year. Again, recent records suggest that it is becoming less numerous, but this may be due to the suppression of what used to be a summer brood feeding upon potatoes, treatment of the fields with sprays and the practice of mechanical harvesting being responsible for the death of larvae. Spring arrivals are distinctly more frequent than with the previous species [Agrius convolvuli], and summer breeding, in spite of the above comment is still not uncommon. Records are predominantly but by no means entirely coastal, with a few having landed on cobles fishing offshore, possibly more suggestive of an easterly origin of immigration than with the previous species. The moths are often found by bee-keepers when harvesting the honey, the habit of feeding on hive-bee honey being well known. [...]
